Hangman looks round as he waits,
Cord stretches tight then it breaks,
Someday we will die in your dreams,
How I wish we were here with you now

Those would be some of the lyrics to ‘In a lonely place’ by Joy division, and that would be Ian Curtis, the lead singer.
As I consider Joy division to be my favourite band of all time, I do these little tribute posts once a year on the above date, as that’s when Ian committed suicide, due to a number of factors, on the eve of their first tour to the States. The three remaining members inducted a fourth person and renamed themselves New order, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Go rent Grant Gee’s brilliant documentary on Joy division from 2007; you won’t regret it. ‘Control‘ is very good as well, although it’s a fiction based on fact…
